Leadership at Sherwood State School

Leadership at Sherwood State School is distributed throughout the school. As the school principal, I understand the importance of having many leaders working together to make our school a great school. Personally I am very much a service orientated leader working within our community to ensure outstanding excellence in education and a strong sense of safety and well-being for us all.

Joining me on the Administration Team are our Deputy Principal and the Business Services Manager. This team meets to discuss school operations from a financial, maintenance and human resources perspective.

Joining me on the Executive Leadership Team are the Deputy Principal, Head of Curriculum and Master Teacher. We meet regularly to oversee the teaching and learning elements of the school.

The Strategic Leadership Team (SLI) comprises: Principal, Deputy Principal, Head of Curriculum, Master Teacher (Literacy/Numeracy Coach), Guidance Officer and two classroom teacher representatives. This team analyses our school-wide data and works through the processes to set strong strategy for the future direction of our school.

Other school teams that meet regularly include and/or who have coordinator roles:

·       Year Level Coordinators

·       Workplace Health and Safety

·       Writing team

·       Local Consultative Committee

·       Maths Team

·       Behaviour team

·       ICT Team

·       Sports team

Teachers also take on many responsibilities beyond their classroom and examples of this include facilitating activities like The Friends of the Nature Area (FONA), the Jump Rope for Heart (Sherwood Arrows) Skipping Team, Opti-Minds, Lego-Robotics, Choir Master (Cantorri, La Bella Voci), and Under 8s Day.

As principal, I also meet weekly with our wonderful Student Council which includes:

·       School Captains and Vice-Captains

·       UNICEF Representatives

·       Two elected representatives from each Year 4 and Year 5 class.

The Student Council organise fund raising to support our World Vision Child amongst many other activities. These students also undertake regular lessons to develop their understanding and capacities of leadership.

Each year there are elections for students who are leaders in Year 6. These positions include:

School Captains, House Captains, Captains for the various music groups including strings, choirs and bands, FONA, and UNICEF.

Student Leadership is an important element of the education provided at Sherwood. In 2001 a Student Leadership Framework was developed after extensive consultation with staff, students and our parent community. The five dimensions of the Student Leadership Framework are:

·       Care and empathy for others

·       Service and initiative

·       Listen well and speak respectfully to others

·       Personal organisation

·       Role model for others

Students must demonstrate a capacity in each of these areas before being considered for student leadership positions.

Many parents are also involved in school leadership positions of the Parents and Citizens Association and the many sub-committees.
