Good afternoon families,
Below are some important music messages to start the year.
Classroom music
Happy 2022! Our lessons may be postponed for a little while but everything is ready in the Music Room! All students at Sherwood take part in Classroom Music lessons once a week. We work on our performance skills through singing and playing instruments, we learn to read and write music and we learn about different styles of music from around the world.
All students need an A4 display folder in which to store their music work. These are stored in the Music Room until Year 5. Students are encouraged to use the folder they purchased in Prep. Most of these folders are already in the Music Room waiting for the students' return! Prep students should have purchased one through the Resource Scheme or independently. These will be brought to the Music Room in the first week of lessons. Year 4-6 students need to make sure they have a pencil and rubber of their own for writing tasks, a pencil case is a practical way to make sure your equipment doesn't get left behind after lessons.
Choir
Sherwood State School has a strong Choral tradition dating back to the earliest years of the school. Our Senior Choir is made up of Year 4 to 6 students. We have 45 students currently on the 2022 list. New students in the school may like to apply for a place in the choir by emailing Mrs Starr at rstar35@eq.edu.au. Students who join the Senior Choir are expected to attend at least 80% of the rehearsals during the year. Students are expected to continue to work on their vocal development throughout the year and do their best to be an independent and confident performer. Rehearsals run from 7:45am-8:45am each Monday in the Music Room.
Band
Year 4 Band players in 2022 will have a day of long lessons on Tuesday 15 February. Students will learn how to manage their instrument and our expectations of students in the program. Only Year 4 players will have lessons that day. Year 4 Band players are encouraged to begin practising regularly as they have the opportunity to join the Senior Band during this year if they are showing excellent progress.
Senior Band will start on Tuesday 22 February with rehearsal starting with set up at 7:30am. All lesson groups will be running as per their timetable from that day forward.
Strings
Year 3 Beginner Strings players will have a workshop day to begin the year on Wednesday 16 February. This workshop will make sure students are allocated their instrument and have a good understanding of how to use and take care of their instrument.
Sinfonia (Year 5 and 6 Strings) will have its first rehearsal on Wednesday 23 February starting at 7:30am in the Music Room. All lesson groups (Year 3-6) will have lessons as per their timetable from that day forward. Year 4 students are encouraged to practise regularly in order to work towards being admitted to Sinfonia sometime this year.
Looking forward to making some wonderful Music in 2022!
Kind regards,
Rebecca Starr
