We invite all Year 5 families to submit an Expression of Interest to take part in the unique STEM Aspire ten-week extension program designed for students from the Benawarra cluster of schools (from Graceville to Oxley). This program will be hosted at Corinda State High School and we will have the opportunity to send 20 students, who will work alongside 20 students from Corinda State School.
The program will focus on extending students’ understanding of STEM subjects in line with the Australian Curriculum and aims to provide students with an exciting opportunity to explore the world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
During the program, children will:
• Participate in a variety of STEM activities and projects that help them understand and apply theoretical concepts in a practical setting;
• Collaborate with like-minded students to solve real-world problems and develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills;
• Work collaboratively with a team to design and construct a product that addresses a real-world problem, which they will present to their family and friends;
• Learn from mentors who are experts in different fields of STEM and receive guidance and support to help them develop their capacity to engage with technology and learn new skills.
Mr Brown, one of Sherwood’s Year 5 teachers, will lead this program and support all Sherwood students selected to join.
Program information
STEM Aspire will be held during school hours weekly on Monday in Term 2. In Weeks 4, 6, 8, and 9, students will work on-site at Corinda State High School. On the remaining Mondays, Mr Brown will support the students here on the Sherwood campus. On the weeks students work at Corinda State High School, they will need to be dropped off by a parent or guardian directly to the high school at 8.30am. Mr Brown will accompany the students via train back to Sherwood State School prior to 3pm. Students will need an active Go Card for this purpose. A final session will be held in Week 3 of Term 3 during the school day, and will extend through to a final celebration and expo which starts at 5.30pm that evening.
The cost of the program will be $50 and will include a branded STEM Aspire t-shirt, as well as cover costs associated with the workshops, and visits from external providers.
Who can register interest in participating?
While this program is open to all Year 5 students, it is designed as an extension program and we are looking for students who will enthusiastically collaborate with others, have developed a keen interest in STEM, and who will also demonstrate academic responsibility in making up on missed class time.
For more information, or to register an expression of interest, please refer to the letter issued to all Year 5 families on Friday 21 April 2023.
